History of the City of Doral
The City of Doral is one of 34 municipalities in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Covering just over 15 square miles, Doral can be found approximately three miles northwest of downtown Miami. The City of Doral is home to about 75,000 people; however, it is also part of the Miami metropolitan area which had a population of over six million people as of the 2020 Census.
Doral’s history begins in the 1950s when real estate pioneers Alfred and Doris Kaskel purchased 2,400 acres with plans to build a golf course and hotel on the land. The “Doral” Country Club opened in 1962, using the combined names of the developers, Doris and Alfred. Featuring a winning golf course and the Doral Hotel, the Doral Country Club quickly became a popular spot for residents and visitors alike. In 1963, the first Doral Open Invitational, a major PGA event, was held at the country club.
Growth was modest in Doral until the 1980s when the Kaskel’s grandson developed Doral Estates followed by Doral Park. After a building moratorium imposed by the county was lifted in 1985, growth in Doral exploded. The West Dade Federation of Homeowner Associations helped direct the future of Doral by getting a police station built instead of a jail and lobbying county officials to implement higher development standards and improve roads, infrastructure, and landscaping in the city. In the 1990s, residents of Doral began to push for incorporation because they were unhappy with the rate of taxes they paid in relation to the services they received. In 2003, a significant majority (85 percent) of voters voted for incorporation and the first Mayor and City Council were installed into office later that year.
The City of Doral Today
The City of Doral has always offered an attractive market for Latin American businesses given the demographics of the city and city officials. For example, Mayor Luigi Boria became the second Venezuelan-American mayor in the United States when he was elected in 2012. Mayor Borgia was succeeded by Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez who was elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020.
Doral’s proximity to Miami International Airport makes it a prime location for financial institutions and import/export businesses. In 2008, Fortune Small Business and CNN Money ranked Doral 51st on a list of 100 cities with the best mix of business advantages and lifestyle appeal. In 2018, Money magazine named the City of Doral one of the Best Places to Live and included Doral as a finalist for its “All-America City Award” the following year.

We would be honored to help accomplish these goals for you within your estate plan.
Because estate planning is not something that is ever truly finished, creating ongoing relationships with our clients is important to us. We hope to be there with you for all those important events to help ensure that your estate plan accounts for those changes. Marriage and/or parenthood, for example, may bring with it the need to include a trust in your estate plan along with incapacity planning strategies and probate avoidance tools. As the value of your estate grows, you may need to consider adding asset protection strategies to your plan. Your retirement plan will also need to be merged with your estate plan to ensure that the two plans work in harmony with one another. Finally, as you look toward your “Golden Years,” the need to include Medicaid planning and funeral planning in your comprehensive estate plan should be discussed.
Our hope at Stivers Law is that we can be there with you as you pass through the various phases of your life to help ensure that your estate plan protects you, your assets, and your loved ones.
